How to: At Home Luxury Spa Day

If there’s one thing Esther could happily talk about for hours (and has, to anyone who’ll listen), it’s what actually makes a luxury spa experience worth your time. Not just the fancy towels or the eye-watering price tag, but the products, the rituals, and the artisans behind the scenes who quietly turn “self-care” into something you're willing to pay hundreds for to just experience. After travelling the world and soaking up some of the finest luxury spas out there, Esther learned that true luxury is intentional, not excessive.

As budgets squeeze tighter, the smart girlies know the difference between spending and spending well. Dropping hundreds on a spa day every time life feels a bit much? Cute idea. Not always practical. And honestly, the real luxury might be knowing you’ve got something just as indulgent waiting at home.

Because sometimes the day gets away from you. Sometimes it’s after work. Sometimes you can’t leave the house. And sometimes you just want the feeling of calm without the logistics. So why not create a luxury spa experience that’s already on hand, ready for exactly when you need it?

Think of this as your permission slip. We say you can have beautiful things and be sensible. Welcome to the smart girlies’ guide to an at-home luxury spa day

Step 1: Create the space

Before a single product is opened, let’s set the right mood.

Start with the scent and light a candle first. Smell does the heavy lifting here. You’re looking for calm, not cupcakes. Think natural, grounding, quietly expensive.
“I’m a sucker for a sweet-smelling candle like every other girly, but if you really want to set a scene, go for a candle that mimics a part of nature you really connect with. For me, it’s the smell of New Zealand forest. When I smell that, I’m instantly reminded of how calm being in the forest makes me”

Next: lighting. Overhead lights are a hard no. Nothing ruins the fantasy faster than feeling like you’re about to be interrogated. Warm-toned lamps, placed at eye level or lower, ideally with a shade.

Sound matters more than you think. Soft music, ambient noise, rainfall, forest sounds. Whatever tells your nervous system it’s safe to unclench.“The most luxurious spas around the world hire a person who specialises in experience creation; part of their job is to find the perfect music to set the scene. These people are the reason why some hotel spas are far above the rest.”

Bring in a teapot. A cute one, with a matching cup and high-quality loose-leaf tea. This isn’t about thirst; we want to create a ceremony.

Warmth is essential. A blanket, a hot water bottle, a heater. Bonus points if the warmth feels slightly moist, like steam lingering in the air to keep your skin feeling moist. You can do this by having a bowl of water next to your heat source to evaporate into the air.

Now, the heroes of the whole experience: a really, really high-quality robe and fluffy slippers. This is where you do not compromise. “I’ve been in the most beautiful spas that were let down by thin, scratchy robes. Personally, I have dry sensitive skin, and if I feel scratchy, I just can’t relax”

And finally, phones out of the space. The feeling of constantly being available is not hot girl viable.

Step 2: The body

At a spa, everything is EXTRA by design. Pick exfoliants that really scrub deep without having to really work them in. This also extends to body oils; you want to pick a thick consistency that'll very slowly sink into the skin. If you're worried about your sofa, lay down a fluffy towel or blanket to protect the fabric.

If you want to really invest in having a more modern experience, this is where Spa Tech comes into play! But as always, this step is completely optional due to space and budget.

“My mother built a spa in a spare room in my childhood home. In it, we had an Ozone sauna, big red light panels, lasers, electromagnetic machines, a hyperbaric chamber and my mother’s very own homemade spa products. It took her years to gather all of this equipment and to learn the skills but she had a real passion for it. If you are looking to invest in spa tech, I would suggest starting with a big red light panel. That was the easiest and most used piece of equipment out of it all.”

Step 3: The treatment

Now that you’ve set the mood, we’re going to make sure that you’ve mastered your treatment line-up. This calls for a little market research on the type of facial you want. Everyone’s skin is different, and the luxury is enjoyed after the curation of products that match you. Have a look online, read menus, or (and this is important) call a spa and ask questions. Yes, ask as if you’re a paying customer.

And don’t stop at your local spot. Look at a genuinely high-end luxury spa, the ones where the price list makes you blink twice. You’re not copying the products, you’re borrowing the structure. The order. The pacing. The ritual.

“Most products that spas use can be bought online, and there are huge differences in price ranges, so shop smart. I love the products used at The Londoner Hotel’s retreat, Omorovicza, but it’s not always realistic. Brands like ESPA are excellent and far more budget-friendly.”

Before starting your facial, prepare a warm, wet towel compress and hold it over the face for a full minute. It softens the skin, opens the pores, and signals to your body that it’s time to relax.

For this step, you’ll need a bowl of lukewarm water, one warm, wet towel, and one fluffy dry towel. Towels matter more than you think. To get that spa-level fluff, pop them in the dryer beforehand to loosen the fibres, or steam them and give them a good shake.

Step 4: Last thoughts

Remember, a spa day is created through intention.

“ Setting the standard for your at-home spa day needs to be done when you have the space and mental clarity. Set some time aside before you get stressed to figure out the ritual that will calm down your nervous system. Then set up a structure that will make it easy for you to grab everything on hand when you really need a pick-me-up. There is nothing worse than wanting to feel calm but having to work hard for it”
